I took my fiancee to look at a new Forester on Saturday and managed to take a really bad picture while I was there! The color is awesome in person, but it was really crappy day and my old potato has dust all inside the camera.

Sticker was just a hair under $40k. I couldn’t get a call back from this dealer when I was shopping STi’s against the S3, or I might be driving a Subaru, probably not but maybe.

As far as the Forester goes, we both drove it and both had only one real complaint, the CVT. Much to my surprise, you can get a get a brand new Forester with a manual! Unfortunately there is around 1 manual for every 100 CVT’s, and the only one within 100 miles of us was gold/bronze. So if soon to be Mrs. Trip decides to throw in the towel on her cooper, she will have to order one.

I have to say, the want was pretty strong, but I had an 04 STi and all that I did was go through tires and get speeding tickets.

I think it’s got just about every option, base is 35, and a fully optioned limited is around 42. They are truly awesome cars.

I agree, I was 21 when I bought my STi and it was perfect then. Now I’m into more sophisticated performance/moto’s.

How is the fit and finish of them? I was looking at getting an all wheel drive car for my next DD, but for that much money I don’t want it falling apart after 2 years. Also not sure about a manual for a DD.

Haha well you have taste beyond your years then. When I was 20 I loved that stupid wing and I had snowboarding stickers all over it, drove it around like a stupid asshole too. I had it only 6 months it got me (I got me) in so much trouble.

It’s my opinion that Subaru’s in general are fantastic cars. I had a 2005 WRX, then a 2004 STi. I really beat the WRX and never had any real problems. The STi, I only had for 6 months but it never gave me any crap. The only bad part about DD’ing one is the suspension, it’s hard, real hard which is part of the allure but a pain in the back on long/daily trips. That an the propensity for hoonage which I engaged in quite frequently are the only downsides.

That is a lot of money for a smurf.

A smurf with a port-injected timing-belt engine.

And a park bench rear wing.

I love the horsepower of these engines... and the drivetrain is second to none anywhere near twice the price.

But this is basically a new chassis and body around the same drivetrain that has been used since the 2004 WRX STI debuted. One would think that the drivetrain development would be long since paid off, enough to use in more than one model.

And with an FA20DIT engine.

I would buy an XV Crosstrek with an FA20DIT backed by the DCCD-6MT and Torsen-equipped R180 diff. (and with rear axle torque vectoring, please...) I would even consider buying one in smurf blue.

But a boy-racer sedan, with a giant wing, and a chassis height that scrapes on speed bumps and broken pavement, and a trunk lid that can’t accept any sizable cargo?

Not again, thanks... I had a tuned Legacy sedan that scraped on speed bumps, and got beaten by broken pavement, and couldn’t even handle moderate cargo... and it looked fantastic, not like the automotive equivalent to a flat-brimmed hat.

Performance-oriented and compact CUVs are coming on right now... and Subaru has such potential. But there is a reason that STIs are getting rare to see, and EVO has produced it’s last, and is now dead.

People who bought these sorts of hot Subarus 10 years ago have grown out of this... what does Subaru offer that customer now that they have grown up a bit, but still love the underpinning power and capability?

I’ll be honest I’m not a fan of Subaru.

But even if I was, I doubt I would have it on my list if I was shopping for a 42k car.

All great points. A friend of mine said the same things (about how the STi has not been updated since inception) and he’s had 3! That combined with the “boy racer” styling, is why I went for an S3 over the STi. “The automotive equivalent to a flat-brimmed hat” Priceless.

It is a great drivetrain... but has long since been paid for.

It should be applied to models at lower price points, and the halo car should be more advanced for $35K-40k+

As much as I love Subaru, they have been dropping the ball recently... and I think Focus RS will eat STI’s lunch, even with it’s transverse drivetrain, compared to the Subaru’s more ideal longitudinal geometry.
